Sean’s getting artsy again. Had to happen eventually.

If you didn’t know my formal education is in Art. Yes, fine art with an emphasis on multimedia design. And yes I work as a software engineer in security gunk. What a world. I’m working on the MS in Software Engineering now so shaddap.

I follow two young ladies on Twitter who are incredibly creative, neither of whom I’ve met. Somehow I came across them when some friends of mine worked Comic-Con in 2010, I’m not sure what the connection was but there it is.

Jen Richards (@mockingnerd) works at a major aquarium in Atlanta and creates incredible illustrations of marine life. This hits home with me because I studied some oceanography and marine biology for my science courses in college before turning my attention to art school. Joie Brown (@joiart) is an art student, illustrator, and ballerina around San Francisco (I think, many apologies if I got the details wrong). Her work is fanciful, playful, and energetic. I have often wondered what Joie could do if she had Anime Studio to make her creations move. Please go visit their sites, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Both of these ladies shared work recently that inspired me to get creative again. So Jen and Joie, thank you.  Here is what’s probably my first set of sketches in 10 years.  I’m going to try to add something new daily for the rest of March. Let’s see where this goes.

After spotting this stunning wild flower in my yard this evening I grabbed Peanut The Destroyer and we both started sketching. I added a little color later. It’s been 10 years, but not too bad for all the accumulated rust.

The color was added with GIMP and my handy Wacom tablet after scanning the sketch

  1. Joie

I’m really glad that I was able to take part in helping to inspire you to make art again! It makes me really happy to know that I helped someone else, even if it was in the smallest of ways. Good for you for trying it out again after all this time. And you aren’t that rusty at all!

And yes, you got the details right. :)
